Need to Learn How to Cornrow Your Own Hair? Check Out These 5 Easy Tutorials

Image
Sometimes I wish people knew how hard it is to be someone who's not blessed with the ability to braid or cornrow . It's disheartening, really, although it's something I can usually deal with since, when I choose to wear my hair in protective styles , I'm normally able to pay for someone else to do it. But every now and again, when I'm crunched for time or money, this issue finds a way to re-present itself. Like right now, with most people staying home as much as possible, it seems like a convenient opportunity to wear a protective style - but unfortunately, most salons are closed due to social distancing measures. Luckily for me (and anyone else who somehow didn't get the braid gene), there are tons of tutorials and video how-tos on YouTube that give people step-by-step instructions on how to braid and cornrow your own hair. In the event that you'll be needing to become your own personal stylist in the next few months, read ahead to see some of our favori

Reformation May Not Be Shipping Dresses, But They Are Making Masks That You Can Buy and Donate

Image
Right now, Reformation's shipping centers are closed to new orders because of the coronavirus, but their latest initiative is one we can definitely get behind. The brand you go to for cute dresses and fun swimwear has taken their dreamy fabrics and used them to make masks . You can buy a pack of five reusable, non-medical grade masks for yourself, or you can donate a pack of five masks ($25), which seems like a really good investment right about now. There are so many essential workers - from healthcare professionals to grocery store workers - that are quite literally helping us all function right now, and the least we can do is help them get some personal protective equipment. I don't plan on leaving my house anytime soon, but I definitely want to donate some masks, especially in honor of my best friend, a New York City nurse. Thank you, Reformation, for making giving back so easy. Related: What Does It Mean to Dress Comfortably? Source: https://ift.tt/2UxWoc7

What Will Bikini Season Be Like This Year? A Swimsuit Designer Weighs In

Image
When I talked to swimwear brand OOKIOH's founder Vivek Agarwal about how the coronavirus pandemic is affecting his business, he made one thing predominantly clear: the industry message is not to shop right now, but to support. One scroll through Instagram makes this clear, but particularly on OOKIOH's page , where a link to the MaskForce NYC Go Fund Me Campaign sits in the brand's bio. "It doesn't necessarily mean spending [directly on the brand's site]," Vivek told me. OOKIOH is known for regenerating ocean waste to make its quality swimwear which is why it's my absolute favorite swim brand , and also why I am not at all surprised that the label is leading the charge in optimism during an economic crisis. "I believe that as the world grapples with the new normal, scientists and researchers across the world are trying to find a solution for this pandemic and they will. I am hopeful that, together, we will soon be able to flatten the curve, and

Let's Make Rachel Green's "Apartment Pants" a Real Thing

Image
One of my favorite scenes from Friends is when Ross and Phoebe try to cover for Rachel's sister Jill after she has a shopping spree. They tell Rachel that they went shopping, not Jill, and show her what they "bought." Phoebe pulls out what Jill calls "Don't you want to rent me this apartment pants", but just calls them "apartment pants." Rachel pretends that she's heard of them and ends up taking the purchase for herself. So sure, apartment pants are totally made up, but I want to make them a real thing. Pants you exclusively wear inside your home? I'm totally into it. Besides, they're more relevant than ever now that we're all social distancing indoors. I'm defining them as an elevated pair of loungewear pants that are a little nicer than your baggiest sweats, but much more comfortable than trousers. So now that we've got that taken care of, let's shop some apartment pants! Rachel would totally approve. Related:

Do Hair-Minimizing Body Lotions and Butters Really Work? 2 Experts Weigh In

Image
Waxing, laser, shaving - there's no shortage of hair-removal methods out there, but when it comes to budget-friendly, store-bought products (aside from shaving, of course), the options get a bit more limited. You can give at-home waxing kits a go, but they take a little practice to get the hang of. Not to mention, it takes a strong mind and determination to rip a waxing strip off of yourself ; it's not for everyone. Which leaves the question: do hair-minimizing body butters and lotions work? How Hair-Minimizing Body Lotions Work "[Hair-minimizing lotions] usually work by altering the structure of the hair follicle, making it weak in order to slow down the production of hair," said dermatologist Dennis Gross, MD . There are different ingredients that can be used in products to minimize hair growth, but capislow is one of his favorites. Karly Fitzgerald, the senior manager of product strategy and development at European Wax Center , further explained how the bran

Sofia Vergara Chooses Gold Thong Sandals for Self-Quarantine Comfort

Image
Sofia Vergara ’s latest look is the perfect example of how to incorporate spring trends into at-home ensembles. The “Modern Family” star posed with her dog for a “#fashionselfi” in a mirror in her living room; she blended together comfort and style in a pair of ripped jeans and a ribbed long-sleeve shirt. Her top echoes tie-dye trends and pops of green that debuted during spring ’20 shows like Versace in Milan and Louis Vuitton in Paris. In addition to her chic choice of shirt, Vergara also took on the growing spring trend of thong sandals; her gold flip-flops included a thin metallic upper strap and a textured flat outsole. As she self-quarantines at home, the actress shared her appreciation for family, saying: “Thankfull for being able to have my son and husband with me.” View this post on Instagram Cuarentena #fashionselfi Thankfull for being able to have my son and husband with me A post shared by Sofia Vergara (@sofiavergara) on Mar 31, 2020

Take it from Twitter user Laura Maynard's grandparents who are currently going viral thanks to the sweetest video of the at-home hair salon they set up while isolating with each other. In the video, Maynard's grandfather is seen finishing up a salon-worthy haircut on her grandmother as she admires her results in a hand mirror. Jonathan Van Ness Gave Jimmy Fallon Tips on Cutting Your Hair at Home

Image
Last night, Jonathan Van Ness appeared on Jimmy Fallon's talk show The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon . Since self-isolating, Fallon has taken his late-night show online and video chats with guests in the new format. Among other things, Fallon asked Van Ness one important question we've all been wondering ourselves since social distancing started: how do you cut your own hair at home while salons are closed ? Given Van Ness's professional experience, he didn't need to think too hard about that one. "I think the most important advice is to not . . . it's just to not do it," Van Ness said. No matter how tempting it is to pick up the scissors while you're spending time at home, resist the urge. He continued to explain that the average human head grows between a quarter to a half an inch a month. "Worst-case scenario, this is going to give you two inches, three inches of hair," Van Ness said. Instead of attempting a DIY chop, he recom

Rihanna's Dreamy New Savage x Fenty Collection Comes in a Rainbow Ombré Star Print

Image
Leave it to Rihanna to bring us some joy with her new April SS20 Savage X Fenty collection. The 32-year-old musician and designer teamed up with her brand's ambassador, Normani , once again for another dreamy photo shoot. The campaign shows off the lingerie collection's latest drop, which is available now to shop on Savagex.com . For the last drop, Normani gave us major goddess energy, and this time, the singer amplified it times 100 with a group of models. If I'm being honest, the first thing I thought of when looking at the images is that they look like a badass girl squad ready to take on the world. Like past collections, the size-inclusive line includes an array of sultry bras, slips, and panties for all occasions at affordable prices. Think: a sheer bralette or sexy lace catsuit that all come in either a new rainbow ombré star print or an artsy outline print of a woman's body. Both of the new prints are a fun way to refresh your underwear drawer if you're i

What Does It Mean to Dress Comfortably?

Image
As I scroll through my favorite sites right now, all I'm seeing are spotlights on sweatpants and sweatshirts , workout clothes, and loungewear . Since we're not around anyone besides the people we live with right now, it's an excuse to get cozy and comfortable. For me, sweatpants are certainly comfortable clothing, but I don't feel like myself when I wear them. If that's the case, then it begs the question: in a time where comfort is king, what does dressing comfortably actually mean? My general aversion to sweatpants comes from my mother, who worked in fashion and was always dressed. One day, in middle school when I forgot my lunch, my mom dropped it off for me in a blue dress, strappy stilettos, and a pretty major turquoise necklace. She was on her way to a meeting, but I'll never forget how powerful and beautiful she looked. Both my parents always taught me that if I wanted to command respect, one of the easiest ways to do that was in how I presented mysel

Here's What You Should Know Before You Put Witch Hazel on Your Skin

Image
Over the past few years, witch hazel has garnered something of a cult following, with many people praising the ingredient for its supposed anti-inflammatory, pore-minimizing, and acne-reducing benefits. In case you're unfamiliar, witch hazel is a plant that grows in North America and Asia, and its leaves and bark are often used to create topical products like toners and ointments that many have incorporated into their daily skin-care routines. But as far as expert opinion is concerned, the research on whether or not the popular ingredient can work wonders for the skin is mixed. For that reason, we talked to celebrity facialist Candace Marino for a little guidance on just what exactly witch hazel can do for your skin . "I like to leave it for acute use - like bug bites, sunburns and scrapes - and avoid using it as a daily skin-care step." "Witch hazel as an ingredient in addition to others inside a product formulation is fine, but I'm not an advocate of l

Katy Perry Models Spiky Pineapple Pumps From Her Own Collection

Image
Katy Perry ’s got tropical vibes on her mind. The “Never Worn White” singer modeled new styles from her own eponymous collection in a pair of pineapple-inspired pumps. Matched to a boho-chic look with a billowing yellow gown and floral earrings, the uppers of the Pinya pumps resemble the prickly skin of pineapple with green leafy detailing peeping out from under the metallic mirrored back counter and 3.5-inch heel. The pair is available on the brand’s website for $129. She joked in the caption of the campaign photos ,saying: “Today’s #ShoesdayTuesday: staying home but making it pineapple.” View this post on Instagram Today’s #ShoesdayTuesday: staying home but making it pineapple @katyperrycollections A post shared by KATY PERRY (@katyperry) on Mar 31, 2020 at 7:48pm PDT CREDIT: Katy Perry Collections Buy: Katy Perry Collections Pinya Pump $129 Buy it Continuing the fruity theme, Perry had on a pineapple-shaped crossbody, also from he

While we certainly haven't limited our imagination when it comes to dreaming about future splurges, we're taking a step back and asking ourselves, "What clothes won't just make me look good but also feel good?" From Soludos's bright new clothing line to Alice + Olivia's rainbow pullovers and some of Cult Gaia's incredible jewelry that could double as artwork, we've rounded up the items that we know we're going to treasure forever. Marc Jacobs Launched a Weekly Draw-Along, So My Book Club Can Wait

Image
Marc Jacobs is officially relieving us of our lockdown boredom by launching a drawing series with artists. The weekly "Drawn Together" activity streams live on the Marc Jacobs Instagram Stories , and Marc tapped artist Jenny Walton to host the kickoff event on Tuesday March 31. Jenny is well-known in the fashion industry, based in New York City, and has done work for Miu Miu, Carolina Herrera, and Bottega Veneta to name a few big brands you might have heard of. Jenny set up a still life in her home, featuring the iconic Marc Jacobs tote, a gorgeous bouquet, and a pile of books, and offered followers sketching tips and tricks she's picked up along the way. The outcome? Well, let's start by saying everyone is here for it - Marc certainly attracted more people than I did that time I tried to start a book club. Jenny and Marc invited fans to tag the brand on their finished masterpieces, and it's so lovely to scroll through all the different illustrations. While w

A Designer Reveals Her Lack of Experience During Haute Couture Week on Making the Cut

Image
After an exciting first episode of Making the Cut , the designers are back with the challenge of creating haute couture looks in Paris. "One must be a couture-inspired, artistic showstopper," Heidi Klum says. "The second look should be a sellable interpretation of that look." The contestants take to the streets for inspiration and pick out luxe fabrics before heading back to the atelier to start creating masterpieces. While some designers soar with the challenge, Martha Gottwald's lack of sewing experience causes her to fall behind and doubt herself. At one point, she even walks out of the atelier and states that she's done. Tim Gunn encourages her to come back and give it her best shot, which she agrees to do. The day of the runway show arrives, and all the designers show their looks at the historic Musée Des Arts Décoratifs. Judges Naomi Campbell , Nicole Richie , fashion editor Carine Roitfeld, and designer Joseph Altuzarra join Klum again to examine

Heidi Klum and Tim Gunn Iconically Reunite in Amazon's First Episode of Making the Cut

Image
They're back! They're back! Heidi Klum and Tim Gunn are together again in Amazon Prime's new fashion competition, Making the Cut . The show is so much more than designing clothes: the 12 contestants have to prove that they have what it takes to run a global brand. Each week, the designers will face a new challenge and a winner will be chosen. This week, the contestants jetted off to Paris to design two looks that represent their own brand identity. Gunn dished out his iconic advice to each designer - some heeded it, while some made the mistake of ignoring him. The runway show took place in front of the Eiffel Tower - so glam, right? Judges Naomi Campbell , Nicole Richie , fashion editor Carine Roitfeld, and designer Joseph Altuzarra joined Klum in the audience to judge the looks. Gunn watched backstage with the designers, lending the support we all love him for. Then came the deliberation back at the atelier, where Klum warned the designers that any number of them ca
