UOMA Beauty's founder and CEO Sharon Chuter created the Pull Up or Shut Up Challenge on June 3 to encourage beauty brands to disclose the makeup of their staff, specifically to share how many Black employees they have. Since she called on the industry to be transparent and share their statistics, many brands have stepped up to the challenge and shared their numbers over Instagram. Chuter explained that the benchmark is 10 percent, which is the percentage of Black college graduates in America, therefore all brands should strive to hit that number at the bare minimum. (She also noted that Black people make up 13 percent of the total US population, so that's another good benchmark.)
