CVS and Walgreens Will No Longer Lock Up Black Beauty Products Behind Cases

Image
Up until now, many drugstores and retailers stored a large majority of their multicultural beauty products behind locked cases, but thanks to the discriminatory policy being brought to light online, that's changing at the chains CVS and Walgreens. The sudden but long-overdue news comes not long after Walmart announced its policy change on June 10. Prior to that, many beauty and personal-care items geared toward people of color were locked behind plastic cases and required employee assistance to access them, while products that were not were left on open shelves. This decision is just one of the ways many brands and retailers are taking action to fight systemic racism and inequality in the beauty industry. Source: https://ift.tt/37DWeoz

You Might Be Shocked to Learn That Many Natural Hair Brands Aren't Black Owned

Image
Image Source: Getty / Artinun Prekmoung / EyeEm In light of the current climate, there's been a huge push for consumers to boost their support of Black-owned brands . Tons of graphics have flooded social media in recent weeks listing out dozens of Black businesses - specifically beauty and fashion brands - for users to support, but with that, many people have discovered that some products that are marketed toward Black people aren't actually Black owned. This is especially true with natural hair-care brands. On June 7, an Instagram account by the name of BeautyBossLab shared a list of several businesses you would think are Black owned but aren't next to a list of those that are. The list of non-Black-owned companies include names like Cantu, African Pride, and Dark & Lovely (all of which specialize in products for women with textured hair), while brands like Mielle Organics, Alikay Naturals, and Naturalicious sit in the opposite category. Needless to say, once the

Yes, You Should Still Be Wearing SPF Under Your Protective Face Mask - Here's Why

Image
In the few months since COVID-19 hit the US, we've found ourselves adjusting to a handful of new routines, one of which is the recommendation that everyone wear protective face masks while out in public to stop the spread of the virus. The logistics of what to do and what not to do while wearing one, though, might be confusing. For example, if you're wondering whether applying sunscreen is a necessary skin-care step to take when you're covering half of your face up, you're not alone. The answer to that question, put simply: yes, you should. "I always recommend wearing full coverage SPF and to reapply often, even when wearing a protective face mask," board certified dermatologist Shari Sperling , DO, told POPSUGAR. "Although these masks cover a portion of the face, you should still wear SPF to ensure protection from harmful UV rays." In some way, this is similar to the question of whether or not you should still be wearing SPF indoors with less e

I Haven't Tweezed My Eyebrows Since February, and It's Weirdly Freeing

Image
I try to look on the bright side of things, so when this whole stay-at-home order started back in March, I welcomed the opportunity to wear less makeup , give the loungewear sets in the back of my closet some love, and take a break from heat styling my hair. I can confidently say boycotting my eyebrow tweezers wasn't part of my initial social-distancing beauty routine , but here we are. I was lucky enough to never be affected by the overplucked eyebrow phase of the '90s and early '00s; my mom served as a cautionary tale with her eyebrows that she swears still to this day haven't grown back. Because of this, I naturally have thicker eyebrows, but admittedly, the tails weren't as filled in as I would like. (My dream brow is somewhere in the neighborhood of Taylor Hill and Lily Collins.) I'm Smiling Way Too Hard at This Video of Keke Palmer Happily Celebrating Her Hair Growth

Image
Image Source: Getty / Steven Ferdman There are few things that beat the feeling of seeing real progress throughout your natural hair growth journey - even Keke Palmer agrees. The actress recently tweeted a video of herself riding around in her car while happily showing off her hair growth and singing along to her new single, "Thick." "Hair is getting thick thick thick thick THICKKKK," she fittingly captioned the video. I don't know about you, but this is the daily dose of Black girl joy I needed. This isn't the first time Palmer has used social media to update fans on her natural journey. Last year, she posted an Instagram video of herself excitedly shaking her hair around after leaving a hair appointment. She also took a moment to praise the organic products that kept her hair healthy since she did a big chop two years prior. "But the gaaaaaag is, #STIFFWHERE?!?!" she captioned it. Read ahead to check out Palmer's full video. Hair i

It features models, artists, and musicians who "embody the bright spark energy of the release." The collection, called "Release 6-20," will be released in three separate drops across June, starting with Drop 1 and 2, which are available on Fenty's website right now. This first drop offers a new take on the brand's corset dress and its side-slit baggy pants, which was from the 2-20 collection. The second drop fuses colors from '90s rave culture with '00s logomania. The collection is inspired by "decades of youth aesthetics and styles that emerged duri

Nicky Hilton brought back retro style for an outing with her husband James Rothschild yesterday in New York. The businesswoman stepped out in a midi floral dress coated in pink, brown and yellow accents, completed with a drawstring waist and flowing sleeves. The style is reminiscent of designs from the ’60s and ’70s hippie era, continuing with a series of vintage trends that have reemerged in recent seasons like ’70s-inspired tie-dye and ’90s-inspired footwear. Willow Smith Brings a Whole New Meaning to Outdoor Athleisure in Her Onitsuka Tiger Campaign

Image
Willow Smith has joined forces with Japanese fashion brand Onitsuka Tiger for Fall 2020, posing for a series of amazing photos taken by Ellie Pritts before the coronavirus outbreak. Willow excites us with her own brand of athleisure through these images (some of which are psychedelic enough to be optical illusions). But her look is infused with Onitsuka's classically tough streetwear, although, in the campaign video you'll watch below, Willow grooves out to her own song "Poolside" from her album The Anxiety with Tyler Cole. So it's pretty safe to say this brand moment was heavily inspired by 19-year-old Willow, her connection with nature, and her overall world view. "Willow Smith is a woman blessed with universal humanism and excellent creativity, going beyond the limits of Generation Z or Millennials. In 2020 when we will enter into a brave new era for humans, we feel a strong affinity and joy as a brand for the fact that we can collaborate with someone

Walmart Says That It Will Officially End Its Practice of Locking Up Black Beauty Products

Image
Update: Shortly after Walmart announced that it will stop keeping its Black beauty products locked up in cabinets in certain locations, CVS and Walgreens have done away with the problematic policy as well. In a statement to POPSUGAR, Walgreens said that the retailer is "currently ensuring multicultural hair care and beauty products are not stored behind locked cases at any of our stores, which has been the case at a limited number of our stores." CVS also said in a written statement that the brand has a "firm-nondiscrimination policy," and that none of its policies have ever been put in place "based on the race or ethnicity of our customers." Original post: As consumers continue to hold large brands accountable for their role in upholding discriminatory policies, Walmart has confirmed that it will no longer lock up its selection of "multicultural hair care and beauty products" in display cases. The retail giant announced the change on June
