Jonathan Van Ness Gave Jimmy Fallon Tips on Cutting Your Hair at Home

Last night, Jonathan Van Ness appeared on Jimmy Fallon's talk show The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. Since self-isolating, Fallon has taken his late-night show online and video chats with guests in the new format.

Among other things, Fallon asked Van Ness one important question we've all been wondering ourselves since social distancing started: how do you cut your own hair at home while salons are closed? Given Van Ness's professional experience, he didn't need to think too hard about that one. "I think the most important advice is to not . . . it's just to not do it," Van Ness said. No matter how tempting it is to pick up the scissors while you're spending time at home, resist the urge.

He continued to explain that the average human head grows between a quarter to a half an inch a month. "Worst-case scenario, this is going to give you two inches, three inches of hair," Van Ness said. Instead of attempting a DIY chop, he recommends trying a new look and allowing yourself to grow a bit of length.

"What you don't want to do is mess up your hair so bad that you're still growing that thing out after the quarantine," Van Ness said. Watch the clip above to see the full video call between Fallon and Van Ness.
