Katie Holmes Brings Back Her Favorite ‘Ugly’ Sandals for Dinner in NYC

Katie Holmes stayed classic and casual last night, en route to dinner in New York.

The actor’s outfit for her evening stroll paired a lace-trimmed white T-shirt with classic light wash blue jeans. Her minimalist accessories included a delicate gold pendant necklace, bracelet and earrings, as well as a reusable cotton tote bag and black face mask.

As for footwear, Holmes returned to an old favorite: her go-to “ugly” sandals, which feature double straps with smooth leather uppers, a wide footbed and adjustable silver buckles. The “Dawson’s Creek” star opted for a pair last year all summer, wearing them with outfits including little black dresses and retro denim skirts. She even gave the sandals an autumn twist come fall, wearing them with a flannel and wide-leg jeans.

Holmes joined a slew of celebrities last year who caught on to the “ugly” shoe trend — typically featuring wide straps and thick rubber or foam soles — and have continued to do so since. Stars such as Heidi Klum, Paris Jackson and Emma Roberts were also spotted in the sporty style, wearing slides and slip-on sandals from brands including Teva, Birkenstock, Gucci and Prada.

The shoes fit into the retro mom aesthetic Holmes has been known to favor, consisting of pieces including wide-leg jeans, reusable tote bags and oversized button-down shirts. These types of pieces typically value comfort over trendiness, but make the case for ease and feeling unrestricted by dress codes. Plus, they’re a welcome nostalgic throwback to vintage style.

Holmes, 42, is mainly known for her classic and chic everywoman style, revisiting and re-wearing beloved pieces year-round. Her go-to streamlined trousers, oversized coats and breezy printed dresses are versatile and universally loved, as their classic nature transcends trends and looks great on anyone. On the footwear front, she keeps her selections classic as well; Vejas sneakers, Gucci loafers, Dorateymur boots and Bottega Veneta mules have all been seen on the star throughout the last year, worn with a range of casual and formal ensembles.

Beyond her impeccable off-duty style and sharp footwear tastes, Holmes’ experience in the fashion industry earned her the title of an Olay brand ambassador. Previously, she also served as the face of Bobbi Brown Cosmetics, Miu Miu and Ann Taylor. Additionally, Holmes was the co-founder of fashion line Holmes & Yang, launched with her then-stylist Jeanne Yang, from 2011 to 2014.
