A Countdown of the Top 10 Style Stars of 2020
There weren’t nearly as many red carpets that rolled out in 2020 compared to other years. But that didn’t stop some of the biggest names in entertainment and fashion from unfurling their own, whether it was through a virtual-only awards show, in a livestream or even just on Instagram. 2020 still brought plenty of major fashion statements, and it even redefined what a red carpet moment looks like.
Below, a countdown of the top 10 stars whose style could not be tamed — in spite of everything that 2020 brought.
10. Miley Cyrus
The music artist made the most of quarantine: She was one of the first to do a full cover photo shoot by herself at home, in April during lockdowns. For appearances on shows like Jimmy Fallon, the Graham Norton Show and the MTV VMAs, the star wholeheartedly sported high fashion looks from designers like Mugler, Tom Ford and Alexandre Vauthier. In the lead up to the November release of her new album “Plastic Hearts,” Cyrus pulled out all the stops, donning a variety of fetish-wearing platform boot after platform boot, mostly worn with fishnets, hot pants or bra tops — or almost nothing at all, as she did for a cover shoot with Rolling Stone, wearing only pantyhose and silver glitter kickers.
9. Zendaya
“If Emmy was a real girl…” Stylist Law Roach best summed up his client’s 2020 Emmy Awards look — a wasp-waisted Christopher John Rogers purple and black moiré gown with heart-shaped, crystal-embellished Christian Louboutin black pumps and a gargantuan amethyst, rubellite, emerald and diamond high jewelry necklace. After spring lockdown and a super-casual summer, Zendaya’s Emmy looks (which also included a Giorgio Armani gown with crystal halter top and polka-dot skirt) were a much-needed dose of glamour. The actress also landed plenty of magazine covers throughout the year, paying tribute to Black fashion talent in the majority of her looks.
8. Timothée Chalamet
The buzzy actor’s nonchalance was a perfect match for 2020’s pandemic style of sweatpants, skateboard tees and tie-dye, but Chalamet’s best look of the year was his Oscars outfit from late February, when his nylon Prada “suit” with bejeweled brooch and wedge platform leather boots drew comparisons to parking valets. The star spent the rest of his year like everyone else: back in sweatpants and sneaks, as he displayed in New York in mid-December after his Saturday Night Live performance.
7. Gabrielle Union-Wade, Dwyane Wade and family
The family that dresses together… looks like they’re having way more fun in quarantine than everyone else. The Wades were undoubtedly 2020’s best dressed family, trying everything from matching tie-dye, matching mommy-and-me sweats and sundresses, matching holiday looks — and even matching colorfully dyed hair, as Wade and daughter Zaya have shown throughout the year.
6. Hailey Baldwin and Justin Bieber
His and hers sweatpants have never looked so appealing — or do they? The wife and husband took couples’ dressing to the next level, going back and forth from super casual to dressed up (at least for her. The ultimate duo look came on Christmas, when the music star posted a photo of himself and his wife in coordinating cozy bathrobes, sweatpants, tube socks and sneakers.
5. Jennifer Lopez
Lopez already had a busy year in 2019, but there was no slowing down in 2020, especially with the launch of new businesses like her beauty line, which debuted this fall. After playing the Superbowl with Shakira in February, the music artist and entrepreneur stayed home in coordinated athleisure and sweats. This fall and winter, Lopez has gone between major award show fashion moments, like her Balmain ensemble at the American Music Awards in November, and dressed-down but still luxe off-duty looks (think puffer coats, sweatpants and Birkin bags, plus the occasional bejeweled Jimmy Choo x Timberland boot).
4. Kamala Harris
Converse All-Stars and Timberland boots might not seem like a big deal alone, but the vice president-elect’s campaign trail style was groundbreaking for a female politician, as was the navy suit that Harris wore upon the announcement as running mate to now-president-elect Joe Biden. Harris, who will become the first Black and South Asian vice president when she is inaugurated on January 20th, celebrated the historic win wearing a suffragette-white Carolina Herrera suit and Manolo Blahnik pumps. “What a privilege to serve such a divine woman — she has incredible style, suitable for any occasion. Kamala Harris is a barrier breaker,” Blahnik told FN exclusively.
3. Dua Lipa
There may be no going out to nightclubs in 2020, but you wouldn’t know it judging from Dua Lipa’s career and accompanying looks throughout the year. From custom Mugler to fresh-off-the runway Versace and over-the-top ballgowns, the “Levitating” singer is keeping everyone inspired to go out when it’s actually possible again.
2. Cardi B
Only Cardi B could simultaneously make “coronavirus” a meme-turned-song, campaign for Democratic presidential candidates (and the 2020 Census), release the hit song of the year (and an equally NSFW music video) and continuously reinvent her style along the way. FN’s Style Influencer of the Year (and Billboard’s Woman of the Year) made 2020 way more exciting, in many ways.
1. Harry Styles
If anyone is taking the idea of masculinity into the new decade, it’s Harry Styles. Despite having to cancel his global tour for his album “Fine Line,” the music artist continued to push the envelope sartorially, trading his now-trademark retro suits and wide leg pants (seen earlier in the year) for looks that bended genders even more. There was his fishnets-and-heeled-Gucci-loafers for Beauty Papers magazine that got everyone buzzing in March lockdowns. Then there was his groundbreaking Vogue cover, in a gown, and the ensuing conversation about masculinity. Styles ended the year publicly with a win from Variety as the Hitmaker of the Year. “Bring back manly men,” the star wrote in a caption of himself, dressed in a frilly suit and shirt. We can’t wait to see what comes next in 2021.
